Our goal is to help keep CT Seniors safe in their homes.
As we become caregivers of older parents or become seniors ouselves, we find that there are programs to help seniors stay in their homes. Programs can include support for tranportation to the doctor, a visit from a home healthcare professional, or meal delivery. We help seniors to stay in their homes and age in place, but what are we doing to make sure their homes are safe for them and their caregivers? The Centers for Disease Control states that home saftey hazards are one of seniors' most significant health risks. There is no better program to fund than keeping people safe within their own home. We are part of the national Senior Home Safety Network and are helping seniors stay safe in their homes.
As senior citizens age or become ill, it becomes more difficult to keep up with the demands of home ownership. For example, electrical hazards, frayed wires, improper use of extension cords, or unsanitary plumbing conditions are ignored. As maintenance is neglected and appliances age, fire and life safety hazards may develop. Trip and fall hazards become more prevalent. As unbelievable as it may seem, Walt Disney’s mother died from carbon monoxide in a home her sons purchased for her.
We have each been touched by the struggle of good people trying to remain in their homes, surrounded by their memories and cherishing the freedoms they would lose in group housing. Calling a contractor to repair or remodel an area is not a safety check. Specialized contractors rarely look at safety hazards across the entire home. The electrical contractor will not necessarily recognize the trip hazards or roof leak. Walt Disney’s repair man did not look past the question of “did the furnace turn on.”
We are not alone in this experience of aging parents. More adult children live away from their parents and do not realize the conditions of their parents' home. Even if they do, they do not have the time or knowledge to correct the home safety hazards with which their loved ones are living.
The Senior Home Safety Checkup Program is the answer. The program addresses the needs of our seniors or other at-risk individuals by providing an easy to understand report that details safety and home environment issues. The report along with the guidance of your inspector can help you prioritize and budget for repairs and maintenance, making the home a safer environment for loved ones.
As part of a national network of Certified Home Safety Checkup Professionals trained to perform these checkups, we understand the needs of seniors and other at-risk individuals. We are equipped to detect and discuss safety and home environment problems. We understand that the health and safety of our seniors and other at-risk citizens can be fragile. Our discussions are handled with extreme tenderness, sensitivity, and care.
The bottom line is that while we were young, our parents kept us safe at home. They value the security and warmth of being in their home as much as we did when we were children. They took care of us when we needed it. Now it is our turn to keep them safe.
